- Jump in and get to know professionals working in the area. Recruiters handle only a small percentage of the jobs that transpire in a given year, so you have to go out and find opportunities yourself. Most people find a job by talking with someone who happens to know of an opening in their company or with their clients. The professionals who think “I’ve worked here forever; I already have a network” and “I don’t know where to start” are out of work the longest. You need to actively seek new contacts while making sure your current network is current, enthusiastic about you, aware of your goals and objectives, and ready to help. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date. Go surfing through your LinkedIn contacts to see what colleagues are doing now.
